Historical city founded on November 1, 1776, and famous for the Mission San Juan Capistrano. This mission, designated the “Jewel of the Missions,” contains picturesque ruins, a distinctive bell wall, and beautifully landscaped grounds. Mission San Juan Capistrano is a popular destination known for its many special events, particularly “The Return of the Swallows.” The Fiesta de las Golondrinas is a week-long celebration of this auspicious event culminated by the Swallows Day Parade and Mercado, street fair. Tradition has it that the main flock arrives on March 19 and flies south on October 23.
